Streamlining Project status report with Jira, Google Sheets

At Kapture, our project management workflow relies heavily on Jira, Google Sheets, and AppScript automation to enhance efficiency and keep our projects on track. Introduction

Managing projects efficiently requires continuous follow-up and transparent communication among team members. However, manual processes for updating project status and following up with engineers can be time-consuming and prone to errors. To address these challenges, we’ve implemented automated solutions using Jira, Google Sheets, and AppScript.

Report Automation with Jira & Google Sheets

Previously, our team manually transferred tasks from Jira to Google Sheets and updated status fields, leading to outdated reports and wasted bandwidth. To streamline this process, we integrated Google Sheets with Jira using the Google Sheets – Jira extension. With this extension, we defined Jira filters and set up automatic data fetch schedules.

Now, we can generate real-time analytics by building pivot tables and charts directly from the synced Jira data in Google Sheets. This allows us to share project status reports with internal and external stakeholders effortlessly.

Here are the basic steps to link Jira to Google sheet

Step 1 ➖ Install Jira Add ons in google sheet

Click on Extensions > Addons in Menu and install “Jira Cloud for Sheets” extension.

Step 2 :-

Copy your Filter Query from Jira and paste in extension interface and fetch tasks

Step 3:- You can schedule fetching of tasks every hour to get task status real time.

Step 4:- Now since you are getting tasks in sheet atuomatically, you can utilize pivot table and other charts to build beautiful and useful dashboards.
